Ðàçðàáàòûâàë ñòàòèñòè÷åñêèå ìåòîäû ñðàâíåíèÿ ôëîð (Gray, 1856–1857, 1859). Ïðåäïîëîæèë âîçìîæíîñòü îáùåãî ïðîèñõîæäåíèÿ ðàçíûõ âèäîâ ðàñòåíèé â âûñîêèõ ñåâåðíûõ øèðîòàõ è ïîñëåäóþùåãî èõ ðàññåëåíèÿ ïî îòäåëüíûì ÷àñòÿì ñåâåðíîé óìåðåííîé çîíû (Gray, 1872, 1857).
